Albuquerque Fire Rescue

Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) protects the City of Albuquerque — approximately 565,000 residents across roughly 190 square miles, the largest city in New Mexico. The department fields about 750 uniformed members from around 25 fire stations and provides structural and wildland fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical service with paramedic ambulance transport (AFR operates the city's 911 ambulance system rather than contracting it out), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Albuquerque International Sunport. The Sandia Mountains and the Bosque (the cottonwood forest along the Rio Grande) create significant wildland-urban interface exposure and seasonal swiftwater/flood-response demands. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Albuquerque Human Resources Department. The process typically includes an online application, written entrance examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the AFR Training Academy for a multi-month recruit course covering structural and wildland firefighting, EMT/paramedic certification, technical rescue, and hazmat awareness. Application windows align with budgeted academy classes and are announced on the official careers portal — confirm eligibility and current status there.
