Atlanta Fire Rescue Department
The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) serves the City of Atlanta — approximately 500,000 residents across 134 square miles, plus the busiest commercial airport in the world at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, where AFRD operates the dedicated ARFF stations. The department fields roughly 1,000 uniformed members from around 35 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, aircraft rescue and firefighting, and an arson investigation unit. EMS first response is provided alongside Grady EMS, which handles primary 911 ambulance transport in Fulton and DeKalb counties. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Atlanta Department of Human Resources. The path typically includes an online application, written entrance examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological screening, polygraph and background investigation, and an interview. Successful candidates attend the AFRD Training Academy for a recruit course covering structural firefighting, EMT certification, ARFF, technical rescue, and hazmat. Academy classes are scheduled around budgeted hiring; opening dates are posted on the official careers page. Confirm current application status and eligibility there.
