Austin Fire Department

The Austin Fire Department (AFD) protects the City of Austin — approximately 970,000 residents across roughly 325 square miles, the capital of Texas and one of the fastest-growing major US cities of the past decade. The department fields about 1,200 uniformed members from around 50 fire stations and provides structural and wildland fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, swiftwater rescue (the Colorado River and seasonal flash flooding create real exposure), and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Primary 911 ambulance transport is handled by Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS), a separate consolidated agency; AFD provides EMT-level medical first response from engines. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Austin Human Resources Department under Texas civil service rules for municipal fire services. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the AFD Training Academy for a recruit course covering structural and wildland firefighting, EMT certification, and technical rescue. Application openings are announced on the official Austin City Jobs portal — confirm eligibility and current status there. Bluewatch is a directory.
