Charlotte Fire Department
The Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) protects the City of Charlotte — approximately 875,000 residents across 310 square miles, the largest city in North Carolina and one of the major US East Coast banking centres. The department fields roughly 1,250 uniformed members from around 45 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (one of the busiest hubs in the country). Primary 911 ambulance transport in Mecklenburg County is provided by MEDIC (a separate agency); CFD paramedics arrive on the engine. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Charlotte Human Resources Department. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and a panel interview. Successful candidates attend the CFD Training Academy for a recruit course covering structural firefighting, EMT certification, technical rescue, and ARFF familiarisation. Hiring windows align with budgeted academy classes and are announced on the official careers page — confirm current eligibility there. Bluewatch is a directory and refers candidates to the official CFD portal.
