Dallas Fire-Rescue Department
Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) protects the City of Dallas — approximately 1.3 million residents across 386 square miles — with roughly 2,000 uniformed members operating from around 60 fire stations. The department combines fire suppression and emergency medical services in a single workforce: every operational firefighter is cross-trained to at least EMT level, and DFR ambulances respond to the city's 911 medical calls. Specialised divisions include technical rescue (heavy rescue, confined space, structural collapse), hazardous materials response, swiftwater rescue (the Trinity River and seasonal flooding create real exposure), arson investigation with sworn police powers, and an ARFF unit at Dallas Love Field. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Dallas Human Resources Department under Texas civil service rules. The process includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological screening, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful applicants attend the DFR Training Academy for a recruit course typically spanning around 32 weeks, covering structural firefighting, EMT certification, technical rescue, and hazmat. Academy classes are scheduled around budgeted hiring needs. Confirm current eligibility, exam windows, and application status on the official DFR recruiting page; Bluewatch does not process applications.
