District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department
The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DC Fire and EMS) protects the federal capital — approximately 700,000 residents across 68 square miles, with substantial added complexity from federal facilities, monuments, and a daily commuter population that roughly doubles the resident headcount. The department fields around 2,000 uniformed members from 33 firehouses and operates a fully integrated fire-EMS model: every operational firefighter is at least EMT-certified, paramedic units provide ALS transport, and the same agency handles fire suppression, advanced life support ambulance service, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and marine firefighting on the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. Special operations include a recognised Urban Search and Rescue capability and routine coordination with federal partners. Firefighter recruitment runs through DC Human Resources and the JoinDCFEMS portal. The process includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, background investigation, and an interview. Successful candidates attend the DC Fire and EMS Training Academy for a recruit course covering structural firefighting, EMT certification, and technical rescue. Confirm current openings and eligibility on the official portal — Bluewatch links to the application; we do not process it.
