Denver Fire Department
The Denver Fire Department (DFD) serves the City and County of Denver — approximately 715,000 residents across 155 square miles — plus Denver International Airport, where DFD operates a dedicated aircraft rescue and firefighting division and is the primary ARFF responder for one of the busiest airports in the world. The department fields roughly 950 uniformed members from around 39 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, ARFF, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and EMS first response (Denver Health Paramedics provides primary 911 ambulance transport). Wildland exposure is significant in the broader region, and DFD maintains wildland response capability for interface incidents. Firefighter recruitment is run by the City and County of Denver Office of Human Resources. The process includes an online application and minimum-qualifications review, a written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the DFD Training Academy for a multi-month recruit course covering structural firefighting, ARFF familiarisation, EMT certification, and technical rescue. Application openings are posted on the official Become-a-Firefighter page — current eligibility, exam dates, and academy schedule live there. Bluewatch is a directory and refers candidates to the official portal.
