Fort Worth Fire Department
The Fort Worth Fire Department (FWFD) protects the City of Fort Worth — approximately 950,000 residents across roughly 355 square miles, the 13th-largest US city by population and part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The department fields about 1,000 uniformed members from around 45 fire stations and provides structural and wildland fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response (MedStar provides primary 911 ambulance transport in the city), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, swiftwater rescue, and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Meacham International Airport. DFW International Airport is covered by a separate DFW Airport Department of Public Safety Fire Division, with FWFD providing mutual aid. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Fort Worth Human Resources Department under Texas civil service rules for municipal fire services. The process typically includes an online application, written entrance examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an interview. Successful candidates attend the FWFD Training Center for a recruit course covering structural firefighting, EMT certification, and technical rescue.
