Fresno Fire Department

The Fresno Fire Department (FFD) protects the City of Fresno — approximately 545,000 residents across roughly 115 square miles in the centre of California's San Joaquin Valley, the agricultural heart of the state. The department fields about 325 uniformed members from around 22 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, emergency medical first response at the EMT level, technical rescue, and hazardous materials response. Primary 911 ambulance transport in Fresno County is provided by American Medical Response (AMR) under a county-wide exclusive operating area contract; FFD engines arrive first for medical calls and provide EMT-level care alongside AMR's paramedic ambulances. Wildland-urban interface exposure is significant on the city's eastern edge as the valley meets the Sierra foothills, and central-valley heat events drive seasonal demand patterns that are distinct from coastal California departments. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Fresno Personnel Services Department under California civil service rules. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the FFD Training Division for a recruit course covering structural and wildland firefighting, EMT certification, and technical rescue.
