Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) is the fire and emergency medical services agency for the consolidated City of Jacksonville and Duval County, Florida — approximately 1 million residents across 875 square miles, making Jacksonville one of the largest cities in the contiguous United States by land area. JFRD fields roughly 1,400 uniformed members from around 60 fire stations and provides structural and wildland fire suppression (north Florida has significant pine-forest interface exposure), advanced life support emergency medical service with paramedic ambulance transport, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, marine firefighting on the St. Johns River and intracoastal waterways, and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Jacksonville International Airport. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Jacksonville Employee Services Department. Florida-specific requirements apply: applicants typically must hold or obtain Florida State Fire Marshal Firefighter II certification and Florida EMT certification as part of the eligibility path. The process includes a written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an interview. Successful candidates attend the JFRD Training Academy for the recruit course. Bluewatch is a directory and refers candidates to the official portal.
