Kansas City Fire Department

The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) is the fire and emergency medical services agency for Kansas City, Missouri — approximately 510,000 residents across roughly 320 square miles. (Kansas City, Kansas across the state line is a separate municipality with its own fire department.) KCFD fields about 1,200 uniformed members from around 34 fire stations and operates a fully integrated fire-EMS model: every operational firefighter is at least EMT-certified, paramedic units provide advanced life support transport, and the same workforce handles fire suppression, ALS emergency medical service, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, swiftwater rescue (the Missouri and Kansas rivers create real flood exposure at their confluence in the city), and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Kansas City International Airport. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Kansas City Human Resources Department. The process typically includes an online application, written entrance examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the KCFD Training Academy for a multi-month recruit course covering structural firefighting, EMT/paramedic certification, technical rescue, and hazmat awareness. Application windows align with budgeted academy classes; confirm current eligibility on the official careers page. Bluewatch is a directory.
