Long Beach Fire Department

The Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) protects the City of Long Beach — approximately 460,000 residents across roughly 50 square miles in southern Los Angeles County. The city contains the Port of Long Beach, one of the busiest container ports in the United States and (together with the adjacent Port of Los Angeles) the busiest port complex in the western hemisphere — a defining feature of the department's risk profile. LBFD fields about 470 uniformed members from 24 fire stations and provides structural and marine fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical service, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, fireboat operations covering the port and the breakwater, and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Long Beach Airport. Combined fire-EMS staffing is the operational model: every operational firefighter is EMT-certified, paramedic units provide ALS transport, and the department is the primary 911 medical-response agency for the city. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Long Beach Civil Service Department. The process typically includes an online application, written or FCTC examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the LBFD Drill Tower for a recruit course covering structural, high-rise, and marine firefighting, EMT certification, and technical rescue. Bluewatch is a directory.
