Louisville Fire & Rescue
Louisville Fire & Rescue protects the Urban Services District of Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government in Kentucky — roughly the area of the pre-2003-merger City of Louisville, around 80 square miles and 270,000 residents. The surrounding suburban portions of Jefferson County are covered by a network of independent suburban fire protection districts (Anchorage, Highview, Jeffersontown, etc.) which operate separately; this is one of the more unusual fire-service-coverage maps among major US metros and a relic of the 2003 city-county merger. The department fields approximately 500 uniformed members from around 22 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and marine firefighting on the Ohio River. EMS first response is provided alongside Louisville Metro EMS, which handles 911 ambulance transport. Firefighter recruitment is administered by Louisville Metro Government Human Resources. The process typically includes an online application, written entrance examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the Louisville Fire Training Academy for a recruit course covering structural firefighting, EMT-level emergency medical response, and technical rescue.
