Memphis Fire Department

The Memphis Fire Department (MFD) protects the City of Memphis — approximately 625,000 residents across 320 square miles along the Mississippi River, with a substantial industrial corridor and a major air-cargo hub at Memphis International Airport (FedEx's primary global sorting facility). MFD fields roughly 1,650 uniformed members from around 55 fire stations and operates an integrated fire-EMS model: every operational firefighter is EMT-certified, paramedic units provide advanced life support transport, and the same workforce handles fire suppression, ALS emergency medical service, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, marine firefighting on the Mississippi, and aircraft rescue and firefighting at the airport. The combination of river, rail, and industrial hazmat exposure is a defining feature of the department's risk profile. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Memphis Division of Human Resources. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an interview. Successful candidates attend the MFD Training Academy for a recruit course covering structural firefighting, EMT certification, technical rescue, and hazmat familiarisation. Confirm current openings on the official portal; Bluewatch refers candidates there.
