Mesa Fire and Medical Department

The Mesa Fire and Medical Department (MFMD) protects the City of Mesa — approximately 505,000 residents across roughly 140 square miles, the third-largest city in Arizona and part of the Phoenix metropolitan automatic-aid network. Mesa participates in the regional automatic-aid system pioneered by Phoenix, where multiple municipal departments respond on the closest-unit principle regardless of jurisdiction boundaries — a model widely cited in US fire-service literature. The department fields about 485 uniformed members from around 22 fire stations and operates an integrated fire-EMS model: every operational firefighter is at least EMT-certified, paramedic units provide advanced life support transport, and the same agency handles fire suppression, ALS emergency medical service, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and wildland response on the city's eastern edge. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is covered by a separate ARFF division operated by the airport authority. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Mesa Human Resources Department. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the MFMD Training Academy for a recruit course covering structural firefighting, EMT/paramedic certification, and technical rescue. Bluewatch is a directory.
