Portland Fire & Rescue
Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) protects the City of Portland — approximately 650,000 residents across 145 square miles spanning two rivers (the Willamette and Columbia), a working port, and significant urban-wildland interface terrain on the western edge of the city. The department fields roughly 700 uniformed members from around 30 fire stations and provides structural and wildland fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response, technical rescue (including swiftwater capability on the Willamette and Columbia), hazardous materials response, and marine firefighting through fireboat stations on the rivers. Primary 911 ambulance transport in Multnomah County is provided by AMR under contract. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Portland Bureau of Human Resources. The process includes an online application, the National Testing Network FireTEAM examination (Portland uses NTN for the written component), the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Successful candidates attend the PF&R Training Division for a recruit academy covering structural and wildland firefighting, EMT certification, and technical rescue. Confirm current openings, eligibility, and NTN testing windows on the official portal; Bluewatch refers candidates there.
