Sacramento Fire Department

The Sacramento Fire Department (SFD) protects the City of Sacramento — approximately 525,000 residents across roughly 100 square miles, the capital of California and the urban core of the Sacramento metropolitan area. The surrounding region is covered by separate agencies including Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District (which protects most of unincorporated Sacramento County) and several other suburban districts. SFD fields about 640 uniformed members from 24 fire stations and operates an integrated fire-EMS model: every operational firefighter is at least EMT-certified, paramedic units provide advanced life support transport, and the same agency handles fire suppression, ALS emergency medical service, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and marine firefighting at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers (swiftwater and ice-pack-fed seasonal flooding are part of the risk profile). Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Sacramento Human Resources Department under California civil service rules. The process typically includes an online application, written or FCTC-style examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the SFD Training Center for a recruit course covering structural and wildland firefighting, EMT/paramedic certification, and technical rescue.
