Tucson Fire Department

The Tucson Fire Department (TFD) protects the City of Tucson — approximately 545,000 residents across 240 square miles in southern Arizona, set in the Sonoran Desert and bordered by significant wildland and federal-lands exposure (Saguaro National Park abuts the city). The department fields roughly 700 uniformed members from around 22 fire stations and operates an integrated fire-EMS model: every operational firefighter is at least EMT-certified, paramedic units provide advanced life support transport, and the same agency handles fire suppression, ALS emergency medical service, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, swiftwater rescue (monsoon-season washes create real flash-flood exposure), and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Tucson International Airport. Wildland-interface response and desert search and rescue are routine parts of the operational picture. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Tucson Human Resources Department. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation, and an oral interview. Successful candidates attend the TFD Training Academy for a recruit course covering structural and wildland firefighting, EMT/paramedic certification, technical rescue, and hazmat.
