UK airport firefighting

UK airport firefighter jobs (ARFF)

Every commercial UK airport above a certain size is required by the Civil Aviation Authority to maintain its own rescue and firefighting service — ARFF (aircraft rescue and firefighting). It’s a separate career from local authority firefighting, with different equipment, training and shift patterns. This page tracks every live ARFF intake we know about.

2 live roles across 2 employers.

UK airport ARFF employers we track

Some airports run their fire service in-house; others contract it out (Falck operates the service at several UK airports). Either way, you apply through the airport or contractor directly.

How airport ARFF differs from local authority firefighting

Different employer, different licensing

Your employer is the airport (or a contractor like Falck), not a fire and rescue authority. The CAA regulates ARFF capability through CAP 168— required equipment, response times, fire category, training standards. You hold an ARFF qualification rather than the operational firefighter standard.

Different incidents

Aircraft incidents are the headline, but ARFF crews handle everything on airfield and terminal property: fuel spills, terminal fires, medical, hazardous materials, water rescue (some airports). Most days are training, drills and inspections rather than calls.

Pay and shifts

Pay varies more widely than local authority — it’s set by the employer, not by the National Joint Council. Shift patterns are typically 12-hour rotations covering 24/7. Heathrow and Gatwick generally pay above the median for the role.

Crossing over

Some FRS firefighters move into ARFF for lifestyle reasons (predictable shifts, less acute trauma). Some ARFF firefighters move into local authority for the broader incident exposure. Cross-qualification isn’t automatic in either direction.
