UK defence fire & rescue

UK defence firefighter jobs

The Ministry of Defence runs its own fire service — Defence Fire and Rescue (DFR)— protecting military airfields, naval bases and other strategic sites. Defence employers also include adjacent services like the British Antarctic Survey’s remote-station fire response. This page tracks live recruitment across both.

UK defence fire employers we track

Most defence fire roles sit under the MoD. Adjacent organisations — like BAS for Antarctic stations — also recruit firefighter-equivalent roles for their own sites.

How defence fire differs from local authority firefighting

Different employer

You’re a Civil Servant employed by the MoD (or a contractor), not a fire and rescue authority. Pay scales are MoD pay bands rather than the National Joint Council. Pension and conditions follow the same.

Different incident profile

Most defence fire stations are based on military airfields or sites with specialist hazards — munitions, fuel, aircraft, ships. Crash/fire is the core capability; structural firefighting and HazMat are routine. Public-facing incidents are rare.

Eligibility and clearance

You need eligibility to work in the UK and to pass security clearance appropriate to the site (typically SC, with CTC or DV at higher-classified locations). Clearance can take months and is part of the formal offer.

Where the stations are

MoD fire stations are concentrated near the major bases — Brize Norton, Coningsby, Lossiemouth, Marham, Wittering, Devonport, Faslane, and others. Relocation is typically required; some sites offer accommodation or relocation support.
