Arlington Fire Department
About AFD
The Arlington Fire Department protects the City of Arlington, Texas — approximately 395,000 residents across roughly 100 square miles between Dallas and Fort Worth in Tarrant County, a key city of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and home to AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys), Globe Life Field (Texas Rangers), and a substantial entertainment district that includes Six Flags Over Texas. The recurring large-crowd events at these venues substantially shape special-events and mass-casualty planning. The department fields about 400 uniformed members from 18 fire stations and operates an integrated fire-EMS model: paramedic units provide advanced life support ambulance transport (Arlington Fire is the primary 911 medical-response agency for the city), and the same workforce handles fire suppression, ALS emergency medical service, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and arson investigation. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Arlington Human Resources Department under Texas civil service rules. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test, oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation. Texas Commission on Fire Protection and Department of State Health Services certifications must be obtained before or within a specified period after hire.
