Cincinnati Fire Department

The Cincinnati Fire Department (CFD) protects the City of Cincinnati — approximately 310,000 residents across roughly 80 square miles on the Ohio River, the third-largest city in Ohio. The department traces continuous service to 1853, when it was reorganised as one of the first fully paid municipal fire services in the United States — a foundational event in US fire-service history. CFD fields about 825 uniformed members from around 25 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical service with paramedic ambulance transport (CFD operates the city's 911 medical system as a fully integrated fire-EMS workforce), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and marine firefighting on the Ohio River. Hillside topography and a dense historic building stock shape the department's operational picture. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Cincinnati Department of Human Resources. Applicants must be at least 17 at application, 18 by appointment, hold a high school diploma or GED, and reside within 35 miles of CFD headquarters by appointment with continuing residency. Each Fire Recruit attends the Cincinnati Fire Training and Personnel Bureau for Firefighter I & II, Fire Safety Inspector, and EMT certification training.
