Newark Fire Division
The Newark Fire Division is the fire suppression and emergency response agency for the City of Newark, New Jersey — approximately 305,000 residents across roughly 25 square miles, the largest city in New Jersey and one of the major US East Coast working ports. The Port of Newark / Port Elizabeth complex is one of the largest container ports in the western hemisphere; Newark Liberty International Airport (covered by a dedicated Port Authority ARFF; the Fire Division provides mutual aid) is one of the busiest US passenger airports. These two installations alongside dense historic residential and industrial neighbourhoods substantially shape the division's operational picture. The Fire Division fields approximately 700 uniformed members from around 17 firehouses and provides structural fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, marine firefighting on the Passaic River and Newark Bay, and arson investigation. Newark Fire is a strictly paid department. Firefighter recruitment in New Jersey is governed by the state Civil Service Commission entry-level firefighter examination; municipal departments hire from the state-managed eligibility list rather than running their own initial exam. Candidates take the New Jersey civil service exam, complete medical and background screening, and are placed on a ranked list. Bluewatch links to the state Civil Service portal for the authoritative process; applications are handled by the State of New Jersey.
