Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire (PBF) is the fire-suppression and technical-response agency for the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — approximately 300,000 residents across 58 square miles at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers, with steep hillside topography, hundreds of bridges, and a dense historic building stock that all shape the department's operational picture. PBF fields about 615 uniformed members from around 30 firehouses and provides structural fire suppression, technical rescue (including river rescue capability, which is routine given the three-river geography), hazardous materials response, and marine firefighting through fireboat operations on the rivers. Emergency medical service for Pittsburgh is provided by the separate Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS, a sister agency in the Department of Public Safety which handles primary 911 ambulance transport. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Pittsburgh Department of Human Resources. The process includes a competitive written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability examination, medical and background screening, and oral interview, with successful candidates ranked on an eligibility list. Pennsylvania EMT certification must be obtained and maintained throughout employment. Residency within a 60-minute drive of downtown is required prior to employment. Bluewatch refers candidates to the official portal.
