Riverside Fire Department

The Riverside Fire Department (RFD) protects the City of Riverside, California — approximately 330,000 residents across roughly 80 square miles, the urban core of Riverside County and one of the larger cities in the Inland Empire. The surrounding unincorporated portions of Riverside County are covered by the separate Riverside County Fire Department, which contracts with CAL FIRE for staffing; the city department is independent and operates its own hiring and academy pipeline. RFD is an ISO Class 1, internationally accredited fire department and fields about 210 uniformed members from 14 fire stations, responding to over 39,000 calls annually. The department provides structural and wildland fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical service, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Riverside Municipal Airport. Inland Empire wildland-urban interface exposure and seasonal extreme-heat operations shape the risk profile. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Riverside Human Resources Department under California civil service rules. Standard requirements include a Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List entry, California State Fire Marshal Firefighter 1 certification, current EMT-1 certification, and a valid CPAT certificate within six months. Lateral entry positions also exist for certified paramedics. Bluewatch is a directory.
