Wichita Fire Department

The Wichita Fire Department (WFD) protects the City of Wichita — approximately 395,000 residents across roughly 165 square miles in south-central Kansas, the largest city in the state and the urban core of the Wichita metropolitan area. The department fields about 425 uniformed members from around 22 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response (Sedgwick County EMS provides primary 911 ambulance transport under a county-wide model; WFD engines respond to medical calls with EMT/AEMT-level care), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, swiftwater rescue (the Arkansas River and seasonal storm response create real exposure), and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. Tornado response and severe-storm operations are a routine part of the operational picture. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Wichita Human Resources Department. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), an oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Kansas EMT certification (or eligibility) is a key requirement. Successful candidates attend the WFD Training Academy for a multi-month recruit course covering structural firefighting, EMT certification, and technical rescue.
