Buffalo Fire Department

About BFD

The Buffalo Fire Department (BFD) protects the City of Buffalo — approximately 275,000 residents across roughly 50 square miles in Erie County on the eastern shore of Lake Erie in Western New York. The city's historic industrial corridor (steel, grain, and rail heritage, much of it now mixed-use and warehouse), dense late-19th-century housing stock, and the well-known lake-effect winter weather substantially shape the operational picture — Buffalo regularly receives among the highest snowfall totals of any major US city, and ice rescue on Lake Erie is a real operational concern. BFD fields about 700 uniformed members from around 21 firehouses and provides structural fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, marine firefighting (a dedicated fireboat covers Lake Erie and the Buffalo River and harbor), ice rescue, and arson investigation. Emergency medical first response is provided alongside private and hospital-based ambulance providers — BFD is a strictly suppression-and-rescue agency. Firefighter recruitment in New York is governed by the New York State Civil Service Commission entry-level firefighter examination; municipal departments hire from the state eligibility list.
