Akron Fire Department
About AFD
The Akron Fire Department (AFD) protects the City of Akron — approximately 190,000 residents across roughly 60 square miles in Summit County, Ohio, the fifth-largest city in the state and historically the "Rubber City" — Goodyear, Firestone, B.F. Goodrich, and General Tire all operated major manufacturing complexes here, and several still maintain significant industrial presence. The combination of legacy and active industrial corridor (Akron remains a major US polymer and rubber-related research centre), dense historic housing stock, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park on the city's eastern edge, and the Ohio & Erie Canal corridor running through downtown substantially shapes the operational picture. AFD fields about 380 uniformed members from around 13 fire stations and operates an all-hazards model: structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical service (AFD operates ALS rescue units providing primary 911 ambulance transport within the city), technical rescue, hazardous materials response (a substantial capability given the polymer-industry risk), water rescue, and arson investigation. Lake-effect winter weather is routine. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the Akron Civil Service Commission. The process typically includes a written examination, CPAT, oral interview, and full medical and background screening. Ohio EMT certification is required.
