About TFRD
Toledo Fire & Rescue (TFRD) protects the City of Toledo — approximately 265,000 residents across roughly 80 square miles in Lucas County, Ohio, at the western end of Lake Erie. The city's industrial heritage (historic glass, automotive, and chemical manufacturing, much of it still operational), the Port of Toledo on the Maumee River, and Lake Erie marine response substantially shape the operational picture. TFRD fields about 520 uniformed members from around 18 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical service (TFRD operates ALS rescue units providing primary 911 ambulance transport within the city), technical rescue, hazardous materials response (a substantial capability given the industrial corridor), marine firefighting and water rescue (a fireboat covers the Maumee River and Lake Erie shoreline), and arson investigation. Lake-effect snow, ice rescue, and severe summer storm response are routine. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Toledo Department of Human Resources under Ohio civil service rules. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test, oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Ohio EMT certification is required. Bluewatch refers candidates to the City of Toledo employment portal.
