About GRFD
The Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) protects the City of Grand Rapids — approximately 200,000 residents across roughly 45 square miles in Kent County, Michigan, the second-largest city in the state and a historic centre of US furniture manufacturing on the Grand River. The combination of dense urban core, substantial medical-research corridor (the Medical Mile contains Spectrum Health, the Van Andel Institute, and the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine), legacy manufacturing risk, and the Grand River cutting through downtown substantially shapes the operational picture. GRFD fields about 215 uniformed members from 13 fire stations and operates an all-hazards model: structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response (Life EMS and AMR provide primary 911 ambulance transport under contract; GRFD engines arrive at the paramedic level on serious medical calls), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue on the Grand River, and arson investigation. Winter operations — including ice rescue and severe lake-effect snow response — are routine. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Grand Rapids Human Resources Department. The process typically includes a written examination, CPAT, oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Michigan EMT certification is required.
