About SPFR
St. Petersburg Fire Rescue (SPFR) protects the City of St. Petersburg — approximately 265,000 residents across roughly 60 square miles in Pinellas County, Florida, on the southern tip of the Pinellas peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The city's distinctive combination of dense urban downtown, extensive coastline, marine and recreational boating activity, and substantial retiree population — Pinellas County has one of the highest concentrations of older residents in Florida — shapes a distinctive operational profile heavily weighted toward emergency medical service. SPFR fields about 365 uniformed members from 12 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response (Sunstar Paramedics provides primary 911 ambulance transport under contract with Pinellas County; SPFR engines arrive first-on-scene with paramedic-level care), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, marine firefighting and water rescue (multiple dedicated fireboats and water-rescue units cover the bay and gulf), and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Albert Whitted Airport. Hurricane and storm-surge response is a defining feature of operations. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of St. Petersburg Human Resources Department. The process includes a written exam, CPAT, oral interview, and full medical and background screening. Bluewatch refers candidates to the official portal.
