Tallahassee Fire Department

About TFD

The Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) protects the City of Tallahassee — approximately 205,000 residents across roughly 105 square miles in Leon County, Florida, the state capital and home to Florida State University and Florida A&M University. The combination of substantial state-government infrastructure, two major university campuses, the Apalachicola National Forest immediately south and west creating real wildland-urban interface exposure, and hurricane and tropical-storm response (particularly inland storm decay from Gulf-track systems) substantially shapes the operational picture. TFD fields about 320 uniformed members from 18 fire stations and operates an all-hazards model: structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response (Leon County EMS provides primary 911 ambulance transport under a county-wide system; TFD engines arrive first-on-scene at the paramedic level), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue on the city's lakes and the Wakulla River system, and wildland firefighting on the city's WUI edge. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Tallahassee Human Resources Department. The process typically includes a written examination, CPAT, oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Florida State EMT certification is required.
