About WFD
The Worcester Fire Department (WFD) protects the City of Worcester — approximately 205,000 residents across roughly 40 square miles in Worcester County, Massachusetts, the second-largest city in New England. The combination of dense historic urban core, substantial higher-education infrastructure (Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Clark University, the Holy Cross campus, and UMass Chan Medical School), and the city's legacy industrial heritage substantially shapes the operational picture. The 1999 Worcester Cold Storage warehouse fire — in which six firefighters died searching for civilians who were not in the building — remains a foundational event in US fire-service search-and-rescue training and an unspoken part of the department's institutional identity. WFD fields about 410 uniformed members from around 13 firehouses and provides structural fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue (the city contains multiple reservoirs and ponds), and arson investigation. Emergency medical service is provided by UMass Memorial-affiliated ambulance providers; WFD provides medical first response at the EMT level. Firefighter recruitment in Massachusetts is governed by the state Human Resources Division entry-level civil service examination; cities including Worcester hire from the state eligibility list.
