Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service

About BFRS

The Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service (BFRS) protects the City of Birmingham — approximately 195,000 residents across roughly 150 square miles in Jefferson County, Alabama, the largest city in the state and historically a centre of US iron and steel production. The city's legacy industrial corridor, substantial medical centre district (UAB Hospital is a major US academic medical centre), and the wider Jones Valley topography substantially shape the operational picture. BFRS fields about 645 uniformed members from around 31 fire stations and operates an all-hazards model: structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response (Birmingham Fire & Rescue provides ALS first response; private ambulance providers handle most 911 transport), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and arson investigation. Severe-weather operations — particularly tornado response in the spring season — are a recurring feature of operations. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the Jefferson County Personnel Board, which manages the firefighter eligibility list for participating municipalities including Birmingham. The process typically includes a written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test, oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Alabama EMT certification is required. Bluewatch links to the City of Birmingham employment portal.
