About BFD
The Boise Fire Department (BFD) protects the City of Boise — approximately 240,000 residents across roughly 85 square miles in Ada County, Idaho, the state capital and the largest city in the Treasure Valley. The high-desert, semi-arid setting at the western edge of the Boise National Forest and the substantial Boise Foothills wildland-urban interface — recurring high-fire-danger summers, occasional flood and ice events — substantially shapes the operational picture. BFD fields about 285 uniformed members from 18 fire stations and operates an all-hazards model: structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response (Ada County Paramedics provides primary 911 ambulance transport under a county-wide system; BFD engines arrive first-on-scene at the paramedic level), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue on the Boise River, and wildland firefighting on the Boise Foothills (a specialised capability that draws on federal and state cooperative resources during major incidents). Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Boise Human Resources Department. The process typically includes a written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test, oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Idaho EMT certification is required. Bluewatch refers candidates to the official portal.
