Jersey City Fire Department
About JCFD
The Jersey City Fire Department (JCFD) protects the City of Jersey City — approximately 295,000 residents across roughly 15 square miles in Hudson County, New Jersey, directly across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan and the second-largest city in the state. The combination of high-rise residential and commercial development along the waterfront (the Newport, Exchange Place, and Grove Street corridors include some of the tallest residential buildings in New Jersey), substantial port and rail infrastructure, the Holland Tunnel, and dense legacy housing stock substantially shapes the operational picture. JCFD fields about 660 uniformed members from around 11 firehouses and provides structural fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, marine firefighting on the Hudson River and Newark Bay (a dedicated fireboat covers the waterfront), and arson investigation. Emergency medical service is provided by separate hospital-based ambulance providers — JCFD is a strictly suppression-and-rescue agency. Firefighter recruitment in New Jersey is governed by the state Civil Service Commission entry-level firefighter examination; municipal departments hire from the state-managed eligibility list rather than running their own initial exam. Bluewatch links to the New Jersey Civil Service Commission portal for the authoritative process; applications are handled by the State.
