Reno Fire Department

About RFD

The Reno Fire Department (RFD) protects the City of Reno — approximately 270,000 residents across roughly 110 square miles in Washoe County, Nevada, on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada at the Truckee Meadows and a core city of the wider Reno–Sparks metropolitan area. The high-altitude (4,500 ft), semi-arid setting brings substantial wildland-urban interface exposure — the surrounding Sierra and Virginia Range carry recurring wildfire risk that has shaped the department's wildland capability — alongside dense downtown casino-hotel risk, the Truckee River, and rapid valley snowmelt flood exposure. RFD fields about 270 uniformed members from 14 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response (REMSA provides primary 911 ambulance transport under a regional public utility model; RFD engines arrive with paramedic-level care), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue on the Truckee River, and wildland firefighting on the city's WUI fringe. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Reno Human Resources Department under Nevada civil service rules. The process includes a written exam, CPAT, oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Bluewatch refers candidates to the official portal.
