Salt Lake City Fire Department

About SLCFD

The Salt Lake City Fire Department (SLCFD) protects the City of Salt Lake City — approximately 205,000 residents across roughly 110 square miles in Salt Lake County, Utah, the state capital and the largest city of the Wasatch Front. The combination of dense downtown core, substantial state-government and university infrastructure (the University of Utah and University of Utah Hospital are major US academic and medical centres), the steep Wasatch Range wildland-urban interface, Great Salt Lake exposure, and altitude (~4,200 ft) substantially shape the operational picture. SLCFD fields about 360 uniformed members from 14 fire stations and operates an all-hazards model: structural fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical first response (Gold Cross Ambulance provides primary 911 ambulance transport under contract for most of the city; SLCFD engines arrive first-on-scene at the paramedic level), technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue, wildland firefighting on the city's WUI edge, and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Salt Lake City International Airport (provided by SLCFD under contract with the airport). Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Salt Lake City Human Resources Department under Utah civil service rules. The process typically includes a written examination, CPAT, oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Bluewatch refers candidates to the official portal.
