About TFD
The Tulsa Fire Department (TFD) protects the City of Tulsa — approximately 410,000 residents across roughly 200 square miles in northeastern Oklahoma, the second-largest city in the state and a historic centre of the US petroleum industry with substantial refining, pipeline, and storage infrastructure still in operation. The combination of tornado-belt severe-weather exposure, a major river (the Arkansas) running through the city, and significant petrochemical risk substantially shapes the operational picture. TFD fields about 720 uniformed members from around 30 fire stations and provides structural fire suppression, emergency medical first response (the Emergency Medical Services Authority — EMSA — provides primary 911 ambulance transport under a public utility model; TFD engines arrive with EMT-level care), technical rescue, hazardous materials response (a substantial capability given the petroleum infrastructure), water rescue, and aircraft rescue and firefighting at Tulsa International Airport. Firefighter recruitment is administered by the City of Tulsa Human Resources Department. The process typically includes an online application, written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test, oral interview, medical and psychological evaluation, polygraph and background investigation. Successful candidates attend the TFD Training Academy. Bluewatch refers candidates to the official City of Tulsa employment portal.
